Re: Francis M. Walbran North Country Flies
Somehow I missed this project, and I love it--as plates of materials for tying have long been an interest of mine. John, can you tell us more about how you are attaching the materials to the ground paper? How are you keeping feather flat? How are dubbings attached? And what sort of paper are you usi...

Re: Australian possum dubbing
Fran's rusty orange possum isa mainstay for many of his patterns--not just the Ausable Wulff, but also the Ausable Caddis, and his Bomber--he also tied Mini Muddlers with it. Every year I'd go into the shop in Wilmington in the 1990s and 00s, I'd buy a couple of bags of dubbing--the shading varied, ...

Re: Pearsalls Color Chart
This chart is new to me: Comes from another forum: https://www.flyfishing.co.uk/fly-tying-forum/476811-pearsalls-silk-alternative.html dd The UK forum didn't cite the source; it's from Edmonds and Lee, Brook and River Trouting. Here's a picture from the first (1916) edition, which was privately pri...

Re: Woven Nymph Body Fly Patterns
Phil - that is an excellent example of Mr. Grants work......I would really like to see a few more angled shots of that pattern Here's a different pattern but equally confounding--an Olive Creeper, from the topside and the bottomside. https://i.postimg.cc/6QgsBjbN/Grant-Olive-Creeper.jpg https://i.p...

Re: Woven Nymph Body Fly Patterns
bb, I have to see those flies sometime. Then we need to dissect one to learn how they were tied. A time-honored and proven tradition--learning to tie by untying, as Walt & Winnie did, and others too. But of course, we will do that, and join the crowd. Perhaps we should get a table at next sprin...

Re: Woven Nymph Body Fly Patterns
This is all Beatbutt's fault. I plead nolo contendere. However, I cannot take credit for the ties. I'd have to give it a lot more practice to get the body tapered like these: https://i.postimg.cc/23R3k80z/IMG-6392.jpg They are all tied with floss bodies--. Grant tied with nylon monofilament. Though...

Re: Availability of Spider Materials Today
I was at the Sow Bug Roundup last week and stood over Shaners shoulder while he and Davy Wooton looked at John's book of materials. To say it was awe inspiring is an understatement. This sounds great! John, do you think you could share with us a few photos of your materials booK? I'd love to see ho...

Re: Gartside
Really nice story. Jack was the real thing--down to earth, scrappy, always making do. And doing things his own way. His catalogues are great documents in the history of fly design--. And his flies are totally consistent (reminds me of Ed Haas in a way). Here's a box of Sparrows Jack tied: https://i....
