Re: Quill-slip wings vs. Dabbler-type wings
Davie McPhail has almost 700 fly tying videos on YouTube. He covers nearly any type of fly you can imagine.
Yes.... I watching those videos, he talks of "tenting" or "cloaking" the wing over the hackle /wing, cutting a wide single section from a feather. He repeats this process for the "beard ...

Re: Folded quill winged wet flies
I too, have passed over the activity of tying matched slip winged wet flies, opting for rolled, bunched, folded or wingless.... My question is simply, don't they all start looking alike after chewed over a few times by a trout (or other fined critter)? The others tend to start all looking much the ...

Re: Team of flies but no droppers.
hmm - i never get tangles, and I am NOT a particularly great caster. I do believe the custom leader works wonders, at least in my case!!
The action of the rod has a lot to do with casting a team of flies as is the length. A ideal rod is a nice slow action 10ft or longer. Not being rude to ...

Re: Team of flies but no droppers.
FliTrap,
This is very good advice and timely feedback. I was fishing a team of flies this past weekend, and did encounter issues with tangles of the three fly set-up. In hind sight, I was fishing a fast action graphite rod. The tighter loops may have been part of the issue. I would have probably ...

Re: Team of flies but no droppers.
One thing only lightly tickled here, in rigging and then fishing multiple flies at a time, is the type rod used along with casting style. I tend to do much better with a slower.... full length action rod to fish several flies as they tend to present a more open casting loop. By being more open in ...

Re: Demonstration of Dubbed Silk Body Technique
When we were out in Montana, Jim Slattery demonstrated a very efficient way of making dubbed silk bodies on his pants leg. Over this past weekend I made up a new dubbing block, along with a fabric overlay.
Great craftsmanship! Liking the idea for sure as it allows consistency to the efforts of ...

Re: Isonychia Beaver (Tutorial)
I figured it was time for me to go back and reread the information on isonychia hatches, as posted in some of these earlier posts. I hope you guys don't mind the recycled post. This just seemed like good timing to revisit a popular insect.
 This stuff is timeless! I never look at the ...

Re: Chadwicks Soft Hackle Nymph (tutorial / sbs)
Thank you all for sharing details of a fly with such historical reference. The fact that this yarn has all but disappeared is not surprising in considering the that it was obviously a blended wool, likely from several critters; maybe from numerous farms /areas of the country, and then for the ...

Re: Spider fishing video.
Actually from the fish's perspective, he blends in well if it is a cloudy day, with the cobble bank and as a tree trunk. I have found any natural color seems to be fine. Blaze orange...not so much.
Many a day, early morning and evenings, were logic beats out the urges to fish, but without the ...

Re: Custom Leaders - My next adventure
Check out the plastic boxes from music CD's..... they will hold 2-3 of your leader discs (may need to adapt diameter?) Then there are different boxes and such to organize your boxes!hankaye wrote: Thu May 30, 2019 6:02 pm REE, Howdy;
