tworod - Your suggestion will add to my growing collection of hackle pliers. Always nice to have options to suit the task at hand. In hindsight I probably should have been using the blue pair in the middle. They have a nice spring mechanism which stretches to gently to protect delicate hackle. https...

I’m impressed that you typed a size 18 with the 4B hen. Did you wrap the hackle, or use bundled hackle fibers?

Those are two great books. Forgotten Flies still holds my personal record for the most I’ve ever spent on a book ($300 bucks). Though I was crazy, but I’m glad I bought it. Simply amazing.

Ron - Me too. :D ;) I found starling to be much more delicate than hen hackle. If I tried to muscle it around I would inadvertently break it off. Hen hackle is stronger, so it is a little more forgiving. Starling feathers have such delicate stems, they require a light touch. I had to switch to my li...
