That's a FINE looking fish and I love the fly!
@Roadkill I really dig your version because I was actually thinking to myself that I would like that pattern but with a really short hackle. Seems you were one step ahead of me with the ostrich. I wouldn't have thought to use that.

It wasn't a new idea, just a transition in midge size from the TDC (viewtopic.php?f=18&t=8782 ) I have tied for decades. Instead of gills it is now a hackle used on many of my tiny midges. ;)

I use a lot of mole applied in a split thread. Ostrich is good but, I can only use the tip of a feather to find barbules small enough for a size 22 and smaller.

I add hen hackle to most any midge pattern. I have a lot of it, and it makes me happy.

It is not as pretty and classy as ostrich or hen, but mole has treated me pretty well over the decades.

I will give my crude ones (Silk & Ostrich, TMC 101 #24) a try on the Crooked River this year...

Where did you find that bleached mole or did you give the skin a bath?
Mike over at Badger Creek had bleached and dyed mole years ago but I haven't seen any since.

Its natural. The light makes it look lighter than it is.

I don't use enough ostrich; it just never occurs to me to tie with it. I need to change that.
