Bizarre thought ...
The brood X cicada hatch will be happening this year in the mid-Atlantic region for the first time in 17 years.
Does anyone have a wet fly version of the cicada? I already know of several dry versions.

Re: Bizarre thought ...
I do now! Behold, the "Brood X Cicada (wet wing imitation)"

Brood X Cicada (wet wing imitation)
Hook - Daiichi Model 2220 (Size 8)
Thread - 8/0 UNI-Thread (Red)
Body - Custom Brood X Blend Dubbing (blend of Walnut/127 Wool Ease Chuncky yarn and Davy Wotton's SLF Bug Dub in Orange)
Wings - Collin's Saddle Hen Feathers (Barred Ginger) - Splayed to the sides
Head - Dubbing (same as above)
Eyes - Davy' Bug Dubbing (Red)
TYING SEQUENCE (easy peasy)

Lay out a line of dubbing, in preparation for the dubbing loop. I recently bought a pair of Loon tweezers which are very useful for creating loooong dubbing loops.

I use a Wasatch "Mitch's Bobbin Whirler" to create/twist/wrap the dubbing loop.

Stroke back the dubbing fibers with each wrap to form a plump tapered body.

Tye in the hen hackle feathers along each side of the body. The wings are splayed out slightly, so the body is visible from below.

Looking up from the belly of the fly. I really like the profile (tapered body and prominent wings).

Dubbing completes the head/eyes of the fly. Small red Ultra Chenille would probably make better protruding red eyes, but I couldn't find mine this morning.

I'm going to give something like a try. I may substitute bear fur for the dubbing.
During the last emergence, I went several days without sleep -- the noise was on par with being in a room a loud washing machine.

Bob - Have you encountered any cicadas yet, or is it still too early?
