Ruffed Grouse Skin

This weekend I was passing thru Roscoe and stopped in at the Beaverkill Angler fly shop. On the back wall, they had several full Ruffed Grouse skins. After carefully looking thru each one, I picked this one. I believe it is a female bird.

The flank feathers (both sides/under the wings) has feathers very similar to Chuckar (French Partridge):

Rump/Tail (underside): Some lovely creamy brown/tan marabou feathers under the tail

All kidding aside, I wish I knew you’re in town Ray..... we could’ve caught up for a few minutes!

BTW - Those quills on the tail feathers, are the absolute perfect shade for the breadbasket: “reddish brown rust”.

The breadbasket is one of the BEST wets to use from Mothers Day to the summer solstice. I don’t mean the Rolka east central PA version........the Ivan north east version is second to none!

Based on our telcon, you have a real gem there, Ray. The barb lengths on the prime Ruffed Grouse skin I got are too long for tying much smaller than Size #10 or #12. We'll be waiting to see some new flies from you.

He forgot to mention "don't slice your fingers off when splitting the feather". It's why I buy rather than tie when it comes to the Breadcrust. (A very effective fly, BTW.)

Breadcrust = size 12-10
Breadbasket = size 4-8

Breadcrust with butter - size 10 only

very nice vid, but thats the popular Rolka version.........I will post up some pix when I get back from Striper fishing.
