Soft Hackle book?

Post by novabass » Thu May 16, 2024 11:29 am

Hey guys, I'm wanting to get a book on soft hackles. I have been debating whether to get The Soft-Hackled Fly by Sylvester Nemes or The Soft-Hackled Fly Addict from Nemes. I would rather have one with more fly patterns to get some ideas from.

What do you guys think?

I love all of Syl's books, I mean, he's the Godfather of American wet fly fishing. I think they're about even as far as fly patterns go. There are more color photos of flies in my copy of The Soft Hackled Fly and tiny soft hackles. You really can't go wrong with either one.

The Soft Hackled Fly Addict is mostly a reprint of Pritt and Edmonds and Lee with a bit of the Soft-Hackled Fly (and a short story). If you have read Pritt or Edmonds and Lee you won't get much out of the Soft Hackled Fly Addict.

Ok, thanks guys! I'm going to go with The Soft Hackled Fly and tiny soft hackles then.

Novabass,

For practical fishing patterns, Nemes' Soft Hackled Fly Imitations has much to offer. It also includes a cool section on Eastern soft hackle patterns that I've found quite valuable. Ted Ward's BWO soft hackle, alone, is worth the price of admission.

Good luck in your search.

Why is there even a question of which one to buy? The correct answer is:... you buy all of them.

I have quite a few books on soft hackles but, by far, the very best is "The North Country Fly: Yorkshire's Soft Hackle Tradition by Robert L. Smith (2015-02-06)" - - - (https://www.amazon.com/North-Country-Fl ... B01K3MIX8U)

Don't pay the "crazy prices" some places are asking. You can order it from
Coch-Y-Bonduu Books. Current price is 35L, plus shipping. Look here:
