will the real no 4 please stand up:)

no 4 on the left was purchased last year from pearsall's online website from the trad gossamer section - and has worked well.

no 4 on the right, was purchased from flytyingboutique this week , i like it, a stronger yellow.

between 3, the 2 4's and 5 one can achieve many shades of olive by adjusting the waxing and a nice strongly yellow olive from the latest no 4 when very lightly waxed with beeswax as against a beeswax/rosin/castor oil wax.

This is interesting. I have four different shades of yellow -three of these are on wooden spools, the fourth is primrose on plastic spool. Likewise, I have three different shades of orange - one of these (the most intense) on a wooden spool. One of my brown spools is of darker shade than the others (all of them plastic). I have two grey wooden spools that are definitly of a darker shade than the plastic grey. My ash spools are another colour altogether (is this the one some call "smoke"?).

I realize the different monitors show colours differently, but I can't match all of my shades to the picture Bob linked to. Nothing strange in that. Different batches can and will differ. Maybe the twist of the silk plays a role too. I have wooden spool of a shade close to the #5, Amber (if you follow Bob's link). That shade on a plastic spool has a completely different "sheen" wich I suppose is due to that the twist is harder.

My point is that the truth of silk has many shades to it...

Whether he has a clue or not is not for me to say, I know I will make good use out of the two no 4's that I have. I have made good use out of pearsalls 4 last season for some simple CDC dries/damps, and I reckon the recent number 4 addition will be of use in this department.

I also am in a quandary on the colors. I have several wooden spools of no. 1 that don't look like anything on the plastic spools. The yellow no. 4 I have is really yellow. I have some wooden spooled silk that I really can't tell exactly what they are as they are so close to another color. Very confusing if you ask me.

Bob NOT to be argumentative, Otter was not stating that any of those in the photo WERE olive, only that one could "achieve" the color of olive with the judicious use of waxes. But, ..... you already knew that.

Would the bright white spool give a "brightening" effect?
