Re: Different Color Mole Skins
I too have one and I must admit it is a geat tool. I have not used it very much, but when I have it has worked very well. I purchased mine from Lawrie as well thanks to Hans. He sent it to me before I had even mailed out a payment. Talk about service. Very pleasant person to deal with. A good investment in my book.

I've looked at the LAW Ceramiscape dubbing rack (http://www.danica.com/flytier/law/law_rake.htm) but after my experience with the metal one, I just learned to clip the fur from the hide and finger blend the fur. I take it from your comment, that you use the LAW dubbing rake and like how it works. What version (course or fine) are you using and how much did you pay for the tool? It looks like it would be expensive. Is it worth the cost?
Edit - I found a nice link giving some answers to my questions regarding the LAW's dubbing rakes, from our friend Han's. (http://outdoorsbest.zeroforum.com/zerot ... id=1576366). Looks like the course and fine tools both have their place.
It looks like the smooth round handle would multi task as a great silk/rayon floss burnisher. This would be very handy when tying classic streamers...hmmm...maybe I do "need" one...![]()
The tool does work, just like the other users testified. Especially on mole (and other short hair fur, such as pine squirrel, chipmunk, etc.) the fine rake is awesome!
Use the coarse one on a muskrat pelt, and see (virtually) guard-hair free 'Adams' dubbing simply well up in a ready to use, unmatted form is an experience to remember and relish

As far as using the handle as a floss burnisher - possible, but it does not have the glass-smooth surface a true burnisher needs. That said, Lawrence did make me an awesome floss burnisher...

The rake handle does double as a very effective knife sharpener!

I have used dubbing rakes for a good number of years now, I started with home made, from hacksaw blades. Using about 1.5 inches of broken blade, I managed to make a small hole in
the centre bui towards the blade back. Then I drilled a fine hole in end of a six inch piece of dowel. Then with a panel pin [fine nail], assembled my rake using super glue to fix everything.
The important thing to remember is, a wide tooth rake will remove the underfur only if carefully used. The fine tooth will remove mixed guard hairs and underfur.
Having said all that, I have been using the Ceramisrape for a while, they are excellent.
I got tired of replacing blades on the hacksaw version, they do get blunt.
Go for the Law Ceramiscrape, they are worth the money, ever sharp.

Hans - Do you know what the LAWS rakes and burnishes are selling for these days? I may add these to my Father's Day wish list...

Ray,
I am pretty sure the rakes are GBP 15, plus shipping, each.
Sorry, no burnishers are being offered.
Cheers,
Hans W

Re: Different Color Mole Skins
Mark (mvendon) - Last night I tried out my old metal dubbing rake on one of the mole skins and it worked like a charm. The tool had been gathering dust on my tying table, but now I have got a good use for it. I also tried it out on a fox squirrel skin and it seemed to pull out a nice blend of dubbing (under fur with just a touch of guard hairs). I didn't played around with this tool enough originally to see it's potential. Now I can see it being very useful for tying soft hackle flies. Thanks for the nudge. I'm going to start using my dubbing rake more often.

Re: Different Color Mole Skins
I can recommend the LAW ceramic rakes. I have been using them for several
years. The fine tooth for guard and under-fur mixed, the coarse for under-fur.
I went through the hack-saw phase and it works but I'm glad I bought the LAW
rakes.

Re: Different Color Mole Skins
Does anyone know if the LAW's ceramic dubbing rake is still available? If so, where?
