Re: Hooks for Leisenring Nymphs
Great info Jim. As you see by my posts I'm a firm believer in different hook weights and shapes for different applications. I believe Donald was looking to get pretty close to Leisenring's flies in appearance. A good model perfect or round bend hook-most likely a dry fly hook- would do the job. I like the Daiichi 1180, if I'm trying to replicate Big Jim's flies on round bend hooks. Do you or anyone know of a round bend wet fly hook? I don't seem to recall any other than spider hooks like the new one posted by wsbailey.
dd,
I'll be truly interested to know what you uncover regarding those hooks. Learning about how our forerunners practiced this art/sport is a real interest that adds a lot to our own enjoyment of it. It's like we are reaching across time to join hands with our brothers from yesteryear. It makes me feel good.

That is exactly how i feel, and another example of that fishing isn't just about catching fish.Soft-hackle wrote:... Stefan,
Discussing things helps me to kind of forget about all the problems I'm having, SO, having brothers and sisters, here, is great as well.

Hi Mark,
Mustad R 70 if you can find them. I have not found a distributor for them yet. Called Mustad, they sent me to a distribuor who didn't have them. Go figure?
I do WANT the hooks.

I am going to take a drive to Cabelas in a few hours. They do not show the R70 hook on their website, but I have noticed that they are notorious for not keeping the site current. It's worth a peek anyways.

Re: Hooks for Leisenring Nymphs
DD, "fly" fishing.....really, has very little to do with "catching."
i've got some GREAT deals from Ken Hook in the past.........
Wayne, Cabelas usually has Mustad 3366 just in case your interested in a pretty good but not fancy MOM (Mary Orvis Marbury) hook.....clip the eye off, and you can do them in the authentic way with a piece of snelled gut or mono. me and a few others bought up all the fancy (blind eye) MOM hooks that Ken Hook had, a few years ago.....but i can send you a few fancies sometime if you like........
