What is a Cruncher?

Can anyone help me understand the name Cruncher? Is it a style? How is it different from a chironomid pattern aside from the soft hackle?

As best I can tell from checking it out on Google, a Cruncher is a variation on a pheasant tail nymph with a collar of soft hackle added. Combinations of material and colors appear to be unlimited: see following website:

LMAO..........what'll they think of next............not that much thinkin' went into it............just rename a flymph and start a whole new school.....
kinna like three card molly................and alllllllllll the variations on "that" theme.....

I've been tying and fishing with Crunchers all along and didnt even know it. Talk about a sub sub category. Kinda like splitting hairs.

Which one of you is trying to bust a practical Joke? Don't you know the difference between a Flymph and a Cruncher? You especially MR. Willow should have notice that this entirely new and modern, exceptional fly design, extraordinary fish catcher fly is very different. OK! Just look at it. Really look at it!!!! The hackles are wound in the opposite direction. Now try to call that a Flymph you big babies.
Actually, what the hell are they saying? A Cruncher? Dumb A's. It's a FLYMPH! And there's a great website for learning how to tye and fish them or learn anything you want about them and their cousins Wet Flies. Just click on flymphforum.com

I just dropped Diptera.co.uk a note asking them to please define the difference between a Flymph and a Cruncher. I also directed them to this website for discussion if they are interested in learning about the Flymph.

The 'Cruncher' is a name given to a rather basic, tailed soft-hackle fly introduced
on UK still-waters a few years ago. About three years ago I raised the point that it was just a Flymph pattern and as a matter of fact a lot of Skues nymphs could be
called 'Crunchers' as well.
Then about a year ago I raised a similar point on a UK web-site and
if I had insulted the Queen, Winston Churchill and Princess Diana's memory
I would have had less vitriolic replies.
It is pure bull excrement. If someone wants to call a fly a new name that is OK, but
if your going to publish, even on the internet, expect to get critiscism and disagreement.
I am afraid that there is quite a lot of this on the UK stillwater fly scene, although it is not unique to it. Ah well! c'est la vie.
