The current color of Pearsall's Hot Orange, #19, is more yellow than the vintage silk. Anybody else noticed this? Disappointing. The three colors that Pete Hidy used the most were Primrose, Hot Orange, and Ash. Ash is no longer being made, and Hot Orange now appears to be a very different color.

Possible the color has faded or changed over time?

RnF, that's usually the reason for color shifts in bright colors, especially when they've been exposed to sunlight. However, the bright one, on the wooden spool, is probably over 40 years old. The one that looks faded is the new one on the white plastic spool. I may have to inquire directly to Pearsall's for an explanation.

May have to do with certian dyes being declaired unsafe
or some other bueraucratic hogwash...imo.....

Hank, That's what my wife said. She is a landscape painter, and knows that the best reds and oranges are made from cadmium, a dangerous heavy metal. I don't know anything about dyes, but if the old Hot Orange used cadmium, then you are probably right. It may have been outlawed, like asbestos, and lead house paint.

For what it's worth, I discovered quite by accident that a touch of wax will bring out a tad more orange in the current #19.

I agree, there is i significant difference between old spool and plastic spool gossamer silk - not only the hot orange but also the sheen of the silk itself on some of the shades. The best asset of modern silk is that it's available, not a bad thing.

I recently picked up some Pearsall's ash gossamer silk on wooden spools from a gentleman in Sweden. Wish I had known I was going to want hot orange. The international transaction was quite painless with Paypal.

It shows a pic of plastic spools. How much is that in US dollars if you know per one roll of Gossamer?
