I was reading Roger Fogg's book on North Country flies and he recommended Drennen Carbon hooks with the straight eye. I did a search and saw that you, Donald and Mike Connor both recommend then. Do you still use them?

One other thing he, Fogg, recommends a tippet no heavier then 2 1/2 lbs. anything heavier the fly won't float correctly. Have you found that to be true?

I use the Drennan specialist hooks. Good for me. But I also use the Hayabusha 390. It is a bit less heavy!

Ruard, how do the Carbon and Specialist hooks differ? Fogg states that he prefers a straight eyed hook light in weight so the fly is just slightly submerged.

FFWM, The Kamasan hooks are I believe the same as Diichi hooks here, would that be an 1140 hook? I have Alec Jackson hooks but I'm not crazy about the silver color.

Narcodog, consider the Daiichi 1480, which has the same shape as the Alec Jackson but is bronze rather than silver.

The Daiichi 1640, one of my favorite spider hooks, is almost exactly the same as the Drennon Carbon hooks. A very nice straight eye, 2X-short shank, kirbed hook. Though it's a light wire hook, I've never lost a fish because of hook failure. I usually demo spiders on a size 10 for visibilities sake, but size 14 seems to be the magic number astream.

The specialist is a little bit more in weight then the Drennan carbon, it looks like the Daiichi 1640 . They all have a straight eye and I love that. I use the B175 more and more but I bend the eye straight after heating it till it is red.

I have the Daiichi 1640. That Daiichi 1480 is also very nice looking. I must resist...must resist...at least for now...lol.
