I believe that would be the "ruffed" type of grouse -- the same bird that Downeasters call "partridge".

Killer ties, John. Those would kill in Arkansas on the White. Also appreciate the hunt pictures. I would like to be able to bag some grouse, have a great dinner, then tie some flies with the same bird all in one day. Maybe if you have any bird pics with your dog, PM or post if you don’t mind. I need to start hunting again- was my main endeavor as a kid. Maybe some bobwhite or dove feathers might make some decent tying feathers?

Don't know about the rest of the folks but Maternal Grandfather was from
Prout's neck and was a Walker, the other side of the same branch were Libbys.
For me "Down East" is the run of the smaller counties from York to Washington
inclusive. Me, I was born 'away'.

No, no! I was genuinely curious; I'm sorry If that came across as 'pointed'; that wasn't my intention at all! I live no where near the Downeast region of my state (Hancock and Washington counties) and it always amuses me how protective downeast residents are of that title. I live a little northwest of Caribou and the rest of the state considers us to be barely out of the pleistocene.
