After seeing your recent Moose Ear hackled fly, I started playing around with some hair-hackle using fox squirrel and my Wasatch "Mitch's Bobbin Whirler". This bobbin makes it easy to tye hair-hackle flies. The fox squirrel guard hairs & under-fur seems to make a nice hackle/thorax material. Thanks for inspiring me to play around with this technique. Seems like a great method for making nymphs with lots of built in movement.
The Moose Ear hackle was done using split thread, guard hair inserted. The Skinny Squirrel has the hair tied encircling the shank with tips pointing forward, and pushed back to their eventual position after the body was completed.
