Yellow Stonefly

Post by Ruard » Tue Mar 12, 2013 11:05 am

Inspired by the book Stoneflies of Eric Leiser and R.H.Boyle I tied this yellow Stonefly. They use a Yellow Mallard feather and Doug send me a bag with them (Thanks Doug) so I finally had the chance to use them.

Image

Hook: stonefly hook # 14 (almost as long as a normal # 10)
Thread: sheer 14/0 claret
Tail: fibers of yellow mallard feather
Abdomen: fibers of yellow mallard feather
Rib: red copper wire
Thorax: dubbing: Possum 60% Rabbit orange 40 % ( dirty yellow I think)
Legs: yellow hen feather
Wingcase: fibers of yellow mallard feather

Lovely stonefly imitation Ruard. We have golden stoneflies in this area, and I think this would be an excellent imitation (although I would probably use a brown rib and thread).

Ruard,
Very nice looking stonefly pattern! I am glad to see my feathers put to such good use in your very capable hands! I dyed those myself a long time ago. It's the only experience I have ever had with dying materials. I liked it and it was fun to see the end results. Now, I get to see you work your magic with them. Great job Ruard!

Ruard, I really like the attitude of this stonefly. I can see this one being effective in lots of situations, and no doubt would make for a loose stonefly adrift.

Love it! Hot rib and all.
I hate it when I think I'm buying organic vegetables, and when I get home I discover they are just regular donuts.

Has all the appealing "creepy crawly" bits that are real fish triggers, I like it. :)

Ruard, I do believe you could use this style of Stone Nymph for most waters. Great profile, and your technique is spot on as usual.

Here is the white one:

Image

Hook: Hayabusha 390 #10
Thread: sheer 14/0 light yellow
Tail: two white biots
Abdomen: fibers of a Lady Amherst tail
Wingcase: White fibers
Thorax: off white antron
Legs: hen saddle feather: pale watery dun

I read in the book of E Leiser that he fishes with white stoneflies because they have "to shed their outer skins by molting".

Ruard - Oh wow, that is fantastic! What a striking beauty. I love the high contrast (white/black) body and the overall profile.
