Baetis Soft Hackle

Hook - TMC100 or equivalent, size 18 – 24
Thread - Red
Body - Olive-gray superfine dubbing or equivalent (I used kapok)
Hackle - Mallard duck shoulder feather or dyed dun hen hackle

Developed by Nick Nicklas from Blue Ribbon Flies in West Yellowstone, MT.

As always Norm, beautifully done. I would like to tie some of those up, I had some surgery Friday so it’s going to be a bit before I can sit at the vice. But this one is first on the list. Your tying is so clean and proportions are spot on.

Norm - I have never used kapok dubbing. What are the benefits/drawbacks of this material?

Based on the above example, it makes a very nice body on small flies. Beautiful fishing pattern.

I think it was Tim Cammisa who said Kapok can make beginner look like an expert at dubbing, and I have to agree that it is very easy to make a tight noodle first time every time. Floats like cork, and takes dye easily. And it isn't synthetic.
