After seeing the Hour Glass Softy that Hans posted on the old forum, http://winglesswets.forumwww.com/hourgl ... 04s25.html I decided to check around for a wingless Royal Coachman pattern. I found all the usual wet fly suspects but no wingless wet. I'm sure it must be out there somewhere, but to quote Thoreau, "Nature abhors a vacuum"... So here goes..

Hook: Dai-Riki 070 wetfly
Thread: Pearsall's Silk - Scarlet
Tail: Golden pheasant tippets
Body: Peacock/Silk/Peacock
Hackle: Coachman Brown Hen Hackle
Note: Thread head was coated with Pro-Lak black lacquer

Nicely executed.

It's such an obvious idea, I'm sure somebody must have done before, but didn't think it worth taking the time to write about.

Thanks for taking the time.

Beautiful Bruce,
That is a killer in any form, a soft hackle would be deadly. Nice work too! CJ

Now that you mention it, I don't remember seeing a soft hackle version. Thanks for the valuable addition to the Royal Family.

Bruce,
Sometime the obvious must be rediscovered. Great idea.

I got one of those from a fly swap once apon a time, but with grizzly hackle. I like yours better, the body is really sleek, which I love.

Very nice! I am going to have to tie some of these up. I love using red on flies and this is a classic.

Way cool Bruce.....ya done good. Btw, everybody LOVES that framed fly i got from you. Down here in the Souff ( :D ) flies like that REALLY go over big. You gotta come down and do the "Bug" Bro. You'll FLIP once you've fished here too.....

Thanks, Mark. I'll make it out there one of these days. Fishy has been talking to me about the Sow Bug for a few years now. I did fish with the Royal Softy this season. I took a few browns with it but it was one of those days that didn't matter what you put on the end of the line. It fished well and I'll be making more of them this winter for sure.

Will you and Misa be at Somerset this weekend? I'm tying both days.

Regards home,
Bruce

Cool Bruce..... i'm the one who kept buggin' Fishy to come and do it.....We just love having your beautiful fly in the collection. i just added a Eugene Sunday to the collection. Got it at the Danbury show.
Unfortunately, (depending on how you look at it $$$$$ ) we won't be at Somerset this year.....or for all we know, ever again. But i haven't missed it cept for last year.....(think we missed last year, lol) since the days when it was in the Medowlands........so i'm really not missin' anything cept seein' good folks like you.
We ened up doin' just at 30 events again this year...........and we really have to slow it up for financial reasons. So missin' Somerset is a good thing. :D Know-what-i-mean? Misa is still in Japan. Gets back on the 24th.
i trust you'll have a great time. Be safe, and say hi to Aaron.....i saw him from a distance at Danbury.....but as far as i know, he never made it over to the Guild's table. :? mark ;)
