Still working on attempting to replicate the style of Pete Hidy for tying flymph patterns, and here's one that I think approaches that goal. The basic recipe is one published in Overfield's "Famous Flies and their Originators", but I changed the ribbing material to make it look more like what Pete and Jim Leisenring did more often than not.

Hook: Mustad R50U (94842), Size #12
Thread: Pearsall's Gossamer silk #19, hot orange
Hackle: Brown partridge
Tail whisks: Brown partridge
Rib: Gudebrod "D" nylon rod winding thread (sub for "Primrose silk or gold wire")
Body: Blend of hare's poll (90%) and orange-brown wool (10%) spun in orange silk on Clark block

That's a beautiful tie. One I'd love to use in deeper, faster water :)

These are coming out really nice Bill. I like the longer tail, the fuller hackle and the cone head. Great job! I think the tying is really close however the R50 just doesn't match. Not much can be done about that though. Keep them coming.

The upturned eye gives the impression of a bug straining for the surface. Very inviting.

Bill - I keep coming back to study this fly in greater detail. I really like your use of nylon rod winding thread for the rib. I think it will maintain it's color when the fly gets wet, rather than darken like silk does. The segmentation will remain clearly visible. I love the jaunty angle of the tail. Did you draw your thumbnail along the tail fibers, to form the curved shape, or was this just careful positioning?

What yarn did you use for the blended dubbing? How small did you clip the strand of yarn, before blending?
