Finished product.

Post by Smuggler » Mon Nov 23, 2015 10:26 am

I finally got around to dyeing my sharptail to substitute for plover. The finished results aren't too bad. Bucky from BRF told me to use the RIT golden yellow dye in powdered form. About 1oz of the dye, 1/4 cup of vinegar and I brought my water to about 180° F and covered the skin just to the point where it was enough to submerge the skin completely.

Not bad for my first time, then again dyeing a complete skin one color isn't rocket science ;)
I quickly noticed as I was drying the bird that most of these feathers aren't mottled like a plover at all really.. mostly the wings are the only feathers you'd really need.

This is tied with a back feather. The color is a little bit more vibrant than the soft golden color of plover but, like I said alot of these feathers have partridge like characteristics.

It turned out well! Those BRF guys are great. If you want to do more experiments then check this out:

Really good job, Eric. You're right about the markings, though ... there's nothing I know of* that matches plover, especially the neck feathers. So soft, so pretty.

*This doesn't mean there isn't; I just don't know about it.

Nicely done. Looks really good. You'll find that dyeing materials can become addictive.

Very well done. The color is very close. Nice spider.

Those turned out good Eric, completely functional substitute.

looks real good. I propose we send all our feathers to Eric now for him to dye them.
