Grouse and Goose Twist Softhackle

Post by William Anderson » Mon Feb 01, 2016 10:25 pm

Another medium to light toned mottled softie for general purpose. I've done a lot of pairing of lighter and darker soft-hackles this past season, weather matching hatches or not. This might be a nice caddis or just good food stuff.

Hook: #16 wet fly hook
Thread: 14/0 orange thread
Hackle: light and mottled grouse shoulder hackle
Body: goose quill fibers twisted with pale yellow silk.

Amazing. That's all I can think of to say about this gem.

<EXPLETIVE/BLEEP> That is a gorgeous pattern!

Even the name of the fly has a great ring to it.

I can hear it now...

"Hey buddy, what did you catch all those fish on?"

To which William hollers back "A Grouse and Goose Soft Hackle Twist!" (kind of sounds like an odd flavor of soft serve ice cream, don't you think?). :D ;) (humor/kidding)

By the way, great photo. You've really got the camera dialed in.

A beauty William, nicely matched with hackle and body.
What grouse is the hackle from?
The colour looks like a Woodcock hackle.
You will b looking forward to using this one.
How hard can it be?

Thanks. I tie twists a lot for texture, durability and mottling. It's a good formula and maybe I'm in a rut, but it's working. I recommend it. Certainly gives a nymph-esque body tone and texture, and all the vitality of a spider. From black gnats to pale tan versions, they are great imitations and general flies.

I haven't posted much in recent months, mostly because I've been dialing in what's working and just tying them in piles. There's a time for just experimenting, but I've been focused on stuff you've all seen before. If my threads seem redundant at times, so is my tying. I'll try to do more photography soon.

I do have some special photo projects coming up that will unfold in coming weeks. Something I'm kind of excited about. :D

Present us a "What's Working" or "William's VERY Favourite(s)" thread. Your experienced top-five (or so) could be the excellent starting point for a new tier/tyer . . . especially one chasing the same species in similar waters.

If refinement leads to reduction, so be it.
