That answers all my questions, I'm sure that we can now use-up some of those wonderful hackles that would have been too large for tying small fies.

While I prefer to tie in a bunch facing over the eye, an other approach is to the them in as last material, butts over the eye. No thorax bulk, but more difficult to produce a small neat head.

I suggest you try both, and see where you end up.

PS Do not overlook the third option - insert barbs into split thread, spin, and wrap stroking back the barbs with each turn.

PPSS Or the fourth - find a feather with mottled fluey barbs, and wrap a single barb to get very small wingless wets.
