Connett's Indefensible

Post by FlyFisherMann1955 » Sat Nov 28, 2020 4:15 pm

From the 1961 book, My Friend The Trout by Eugene V. Connett III comes the pattern he developed while trying to imitate the Tups Indispensable.

Hook: Size 16 (Sneck-bend hook)
Thread: Pearsall's Gossamer - Yellow
Tail: Blue dun hackle or wood duck flank (a few fibers, tied short)
Abdomen: Pinkish-brown beaver fur (tied thin)
Rib: Very fine gold wire
Thorax: Pinkish-brown beaver fur (tied thicker and picked out)
Hackle: Dark blue dun hen (tied short and sparse)

Ken's Notes:
Hook: Mustad 3906 B - size 14
Thread: I used Primrose, not yellow
Tag: I added a tag using the x small gold wire
Tail: I mixed blue dun and wood duck fibers
Abdomen: I used Snowshoe rabbit - medium dun
Thorax: Again, Snowshoe rabbit (Split thread method)
Hackle: 2 turns; I used a feather I thought was 1 hook size smaller (size 16)

Tight Lines- Ken

Ken - Your adaptations are absolutely brilliant. Snowshoe dubbing is such a great choice for an emerging pattern.

This makes me think of some of Fran Betters patterns. I’d be tempted to rye a couple using hot orange tread too.

Love the name too. Funny.

Wow Ken,
You really opened up a can of creativity on this one! I especially like the combination of tail materials! Rather snazzy I think! I am also paying attention to the proportions of each part of the fly! On the head end, a great idea to pull the hackle size down one size - size 16 hackle on a size 14 hook! Yea....Skues would be proud of you! I know we are! Keep up the good work Ken! We will be watching closely for additions to this dandy pattern!

Fish when you can, not when you should! Anything short of this is just a disaster.
