Mole

Post by paparex » Mon Oct 10, 2011 4:23 pm

A number of soft hackles call for mole dubbing as the thorax. No color is indicated. When I go to buy mole it seems to be in brown or black. Should the mole be brown? Or, does it not matter?

Natural mole is usually blue gray but comes in many dyed colors, you really need them all.

If you look around, you can find mole skins dyed in many different colors (see links below). If a fly recipe does not list the color, I would recommend going with the natural color Bob mentioned above (natural mole tends to be a dark dun color).

This fly is tyed with natural colored mole:

If you can get your hands on tan, cinnamon or brown, buy them. They are hard to find and work extremely well on small ant patterns.
