Jackdaw, anyone?

Post by Izaak » Mon Feb 06, 2012 2:54 pm

I've come across a few patterns that call for Jackdaw hackle. Has anyone used this material and/or have a photo of a jackdaw hackled fly? I know what a jackdaw is......kind of reminds me of the common grackle in the U.S. without as much iridescence.

I have used it for a fly: http://www.flymphforum.com/viewtopic.ph ... uard#p6912

It is quite fragil but beautiful blackish grey.

Jackdaw ( Corvus monedula 13”) provides some useful hackles, from the neck and body scalp and wings. The scalp or ruff which is a light blue grey is also specified for a number of spiders. Other feathers are mainly dark grey. Body feathers may also be used as a substitute for various other dark blue dun feathers. The image in the painting below is rather brown, the bird is mainly black with some grey feathers. Some feathers are also iridescent. The skin is shown below.

Thanks so much for that information, and the photos are great! I am awaiting a jackdaw skin that I have ordered along with a few other bird skins that I am looking forward to getting my hands on. You all are helping me think of ideas for new fly patterns!

Here is where I found the jackdaw. Pretty sure I just ordered the wings and not the full skin as I had (probably mistakenly) reported earlier.
