Correct. Grip 14723BL or Partridge SLD.

The video is to serve a dual purpose - the actual pattern, and showing the generic, very versatile, technique of combining very different materials in a single rope.

Thanks for another great video.
To someone such as myself, still at or the near bottom of the learning curve,
seeing a fly such as this it looks complicated. However, after
viewing your video It seems simple. They all do, when watching your videos.
You don't even get flustered (aka up-set), when something that would frustrate
a novice.
I'm gonna have to find some tying lessons. The 'in person' varity, so I can say "stop,
why did you do it that way", or "OH ! that's how that's done !!!"

Now, all I have to do is find another tyer in the Southwest desert .......

It was the thread tag that was the clincher, that and stroking the barbs back with each wrap.

I think there will be some bronze herl samples of this in the fly box for Ireland in June. Cheers.

Tag end is optional - single herl benefits from the reinforcement. The technique is very versatile, think dubbing, CDC, hair hackle, herl of many kinds, wire, flash, etc.

Hans, careful..... you are starting to describe small wooly buggers! .
Wrapping single herl like that has led to breakages in my ham fisted tying realm, especially when combined with anothe material that is stronger like feather stem. The thread tag should negate this.
I do wonder though..... how would a stripped herl version go?

A stripped herl combined/twisted with other material strikes me as a waste of time.

Maybe I am missing something?
