Hope nobody minds, but I will add some info here. Mohair ( it is obtained from Angora Goats) was once one of the most widely used fly-dressing materials of all. You can use it as dubbing on more or less any fly that calls for dubbing, and you can also blend it with fur etc as desired. Many of the older fly-dressers were lavish in its praise and there are countless patterns in many older books which specify it. For some reason or other it fell out of fashion, many dressers ( especially of salmon flies) moving to seal fur. However, good quality seal fur ( for fly-dressing purposes ) can be very hard to obtain. You can substitute mohair in any dressing that calls for seal fur. It has very slightly less lustre than seal fur, but works extremely well and is much easier to use. It is an absolutely first class material for a lot of things. I have quite a large selection of mohair and have used it for a whole host of things. It is much better than ordinary sheeps wool.

You wont find many examples in a lot of newer books because it went out of fashion, This should give you enough references to check though.

That is by no means all, just a cross section from about 700 books on fly-fishing and dressing that I have in one directory. There are some references in some modern books, but not as many.

Mohair is basically indispensable to the fly-dresser in my opinion.

I think you show that wool is a forgotten material for most fly tiers. The evidence is overwhelming to say the least!

One reason, ( which even Skues commented on! See the comment I highlighted in his book) was that a lot of fly-dressers, heavily influenced by a lot of English Chalk Stream literature became obsessed with using quill and similar materials. Wool and mohair and a lot of other stuff was eschewed as being "too common". Many people who used it did not write books about it, or about anything else for that matter. Nevertheless, even a little research will show that it was once very heavily used. It still works as well as it ever did. Even more so in some cases, with synthetic blends and stuff like that. ( Chadwicks 477 is blend of wool and nylon). There are some blends which are absolutely deadly on some flies. Yelow mohair and hare fur is just one of them.

Also, the trend toward the use of a lot of exotic stuff relegated some materials to being almost forgotten. The same thing happens nowadays with a lot of things. New materials are discovered every day, They are rarely any better than the old stuff and often very poor indeed in comparison.

Very good pdf viewer and the search is excellent.

The issue that faces most fly tiers is that blending for blendings sake is a waste of time and its all to easy spend half your life unfocussed. No matter how good any material is property wise, the blend aught to approximate the natural and thats where the foucus should lie. Off course it helps if the materials are suitable in the first place.

I havent used mohair at all, I like seals fur for some things, but for many of the flies that I tie for the river, the coarseness of seals fur can be a problem - fine on caddis pupa etc but for many of the smaller upwings I believe it is often unsuitable . Gonna get some in a few colours and see how it behaves.
