You will be pleased with it. You can get fairly good selections in most wool shops, but the selection Old Hat posted looks very good;

http://toppertackle.com/products%20all%20sm.htm

( The actual website address is; http://toppertackle.com/ ).

Blending is a very involved subject. It works very well indeed on quite a few flies and some old dressings give pretty good proportions to start from. Just mixing pretty colours together is not likely to be very successful. You need to look at some flies very very closely and then blend as you think fit. Adjusting as required until the fly works as you want it to. You can spend a lot of time on it ( what else is new? :) ).

I used many old flies as starting points for a lot of things, especially some materials, and then refined as I thought fit. Takes time!

I don't use the PDF exchange search much any more, I have another set up running on Linux. Purely due to the volume of stuff I have. It still works fine if you only have a limited number of books in a directory.

This also works very well on Windows;

Mohair does not become waterlogged as ordinary sheeps wool will, so you can use it on dry flies as well no problem. You can wind the mohair wool strands as well of course, but I usually dub it. You need to cut it to length and a trip through a blender is a good idea in most cases. If you want to blend with fur as well. Make sure you check the wet colours of any blends.
I have a few blends that work well on some of my flies but I don't usually bother mentioning it. Many people will just laugh and say "that is taking things too far". Up to them, works for me.

Most just grab something out of a dubbing box. This may or may not work well. Really well matched stuff works better.

In a recent thread that I am unable to locate, testing patterns against each other has little merit. This was the opinion of most that responded to that thread. I am of a different opinion, and would like to hear of your results.

It has been more years than I can count since I used wool. For a leech pattern I prefer the lowly Woolly Bugger or Bunny Leech to Mohair.

For nymphs and Soft Hackles, I preferred a slim tight body that I can achieve with fur to that of wool. I have never subscribed to the school of trapped bubbles being a big trigger for my patterns. I am not an opponent to wool, I just never felt the need to pursue it as a material for my patterns.

In a completely unscientific experiment that I conducted, the patterns that I tied with fur and feather out performed the patterns I tied with wool. My results were so lopsided that I threw away all of the wool that I had purchased.

There have been too many fishermen, tiers, and scholars that are smarter than me, who prefer wool. I can not, and am not making any kind of arguement against them. I am saying that, for me, I prefer other materials to wool.

A lot depends on how you test them. To be honest I can't see any other way to do it. The only way to see if something works well is to try it. In order to see if somethmg works better than something else you need to try both.

The question there is "why" do you prefer it? Because it is more successful for you?

With all due respect, what a person prefers is irrelevant, what a fish prefers is the point of the exercise

Things like that can happen. I don't use ordinary sheeps wool much myself, but mohair is a different matter.

There have been too many fishermen, tiers, and scholars that are smarter than me, who prefer wool. I can not, and am not making any kind of arguement against them. I am saying that, for me, I prefer other materials to wool.
No problem at all with that. Lots of people decide to use only certain things. Some prefer natural stuff, others synthetics, others mix it up. If something doesn't work for you then you don't really have many sensible options. You can try to find out why it is not working in the hope of finding a solution, or abandon it and try something else. If you are happy with what you use and satisfied with your results then there is no reason to change. But the onl way to test various things is to try them and compare the results.

Yes, I have read them all, besides a lot more, some many times.

Well, yes, it is a lot of work, but you can correlate resuts and draw some very useful conclusions, if you search for "mohair" in one of Halford's books for instance;

http://archive.org/stream/moderndevelop ... 7/mode/2up

you will get zero results.

If you search in some others;

http://archive.org/stream/ogdenonflytyi ... 5/mode/2up

http://archive.org/stream/ogdenonflytyi ... rch/mohair

http://archive.org/stream/naturaltroutf ... 3/mode/2up

http://archive.org/stream/naturaltroutf ... rch/mohair

http://archive.org/stream/teesdaleangle ... rch/mohair

http://archive.org/stream/flyfishentomo ... rch/mohair

you will find a lot of references. Of course for a representative selection of references you need a fairly good and representative collection of books. Some dressers and authors favoured certain materials, others eschewed them entirely.

It was in the the beginning,
Will be in the end
Forever and ever , Amen. :)

Fashion & availability governs a lot of these things. Simply proves that any fiy fisher that ties his own flies can follow the trends or find out what works for him and live by his/her decision. There is no singular answer, no real definitives in any of this as the fly and the angler must work in unison.

For example, you may tie seemingly identical flies, using slightly different body materials - one may have a body that is completely water repellant, the other may absorb some or a lot of water - both may be effective , but depending on how you fish them they can behave very differently. These subtle differnences may not seem much, will be beyond the understanding of most of us but once you start to think about these things , even if you cannot fully understand the implications you will certainly be more cognisant that subtle differences in the properties of the materials MAY affect the effectivesness of a fly.

I am of the opinion (unfounded, based purely on limited experience and my own perceptions ) that as you move up the water column the properties of the materials being used become more important in many instances.
The thing is , if you cannot get a lot of time actually fishing, then a lot of this stuff whilst useful to consider is very hard to take full advantage of.

Good conversation though and good to look at particular materials and learn a bit more of their properties.
