[Tiny trout]

A fished Green Drake (presumable Western Green Drake, although its as yellow and bright as an Eastern Green Drake) pattern with an underwing of brightly dyed deer hair. There is a mottled hen hackle and there is a type of hair hackle in front, too thin to be deer, looks more like hares mask guard hairs, but I'm not sure.

An interesting tippet knot, not one I use. If you recognize it I'd be curious to hear what it's called.

It's an odd looking knot, generally the tag ends are pointed to the bend.
Closest I could find is the Orvis Knot, which has the tag facing the rod.

Howdy All;

To late to edit my last reply. Followed Tiny trout's idea, highlighted the phrase > Midge Magic by Holbrook <
left clicked on it and selected Google search. Went to Amazon and 'Looked Inside". On page 6 was a box
with a drawing of "The KNOT" no other name and was credited to someone's son form the Salt Lake City area
way back about 1999. Even if the tag ends up at 90° it looks like a good one to me...

My vote is for the Palomar knot, as it looks to me like the tippet has passed through the eye of the hook twice?

Hank, you are assuming (from a Military background?) that everybody follows the rules and regulations as set out in the manual. This particular knot may be none of the above, or it may be one of the above tied with one or two less wraps before tightening- thus leading to less bulk.
Maybe it was tied in the heat of the moment when the rise was on and the fly needed to get in the water quick and short cuts were taken!
Or the tier had come to learn that a couple of turns was enough for the size of fish he most often encountered?

Granted it has only one turn through the eye, but I'm not ( ), convinced that the one in the photo
shared by dub-ya does. Perhaps he can confirm if it does indeed or only a single turn. Which would
follow your tyed in haste theory.
It was my understanding that the number of turns used was not a option and that a certain number were
required for the knot to do it's job. Proper military thinking would be "Adapt, Overcome, Survive" . , , .
