Carl, I've never tied on those hooks, i'd love to have a few if you wouldnt mind.

Dave
Sure, I'll get some out to you.
Carl, If you have any Dai-Riki #270 size #10. I use them on some of my soft hackle patterns. Will pay you for them.

John

Wait... are you saying Dai-Riki is discontinuing their line of hooks, phasing out certain model numbers,
or you just like Wholesale Fly better?
They look to be a very very close match -

You have to 'roll' those brittle barbs down by 'squeezing' them from the tip towards the bend of the hook in order to avoid breaking them. The easiest way to do this is to use pliers with bent jaws. The difficult part is to find such pliers that are fine enough. You probably need to modify a pair.
When you grip the hook with the pliers the lower jaw is supposed to be still and the upper jaw should move towards the hook bend, squeeezing the barb down in the process.

Clear as mud??

Hemostats, or a jewelers file work fine.....

You folk put way too much thought in to smashing barbs. I promise Mustad is not as sensitive as you make them out to be.

dd and others, I actually solved the problem by using a Dremel tool and grinding the barbs off.

If I ever have to take a dremel to a hook, I will know right then I have been cheated. So weird

I use smooth jaw pliers and insert the hook into the front of the jaws not the side. The force closes down first on the barb applying pressure toward the bend. Jewelry making pliers from craft stores are my favorite. ;)

With the very old Hardy hooks that I have there is no way pinching the barbs down works, a broken hook every time. I’m not the only one who uses a Dremel to remove the barbs. It’s a fine tool in both senses
