Narcodog,
I was just ready to head for the barn and drift off to dreamy land when I caught this post about skunk fly. Sounds interesting.....and smelly! Was the skunk that was given to you washed or cleaned or deodorized or martinized? The pattern receipe sounds pretty interesting and the "bow you lost must have thought it was pretty tasty too! It's kinda creul isn't it when you loose the one and only killer pattern? When you get a couple more in production, let us see what it's like! Also, does anyone know if skunk skins are avail. commercially? Good stuff friend!
Headin' for dreamier places....in my mind,
Dougsden

Fish when you can, not when you should! Anything short of this is just a disaster.

Kelly, just sit back, close your eyes, relax. Now imagine your sitting at your vise with a hook and black 6/0 thread attached and hanging at the bend.Kelly L. wrote:I'd love to see this fly too!
Now you cut a few guard hair fibers from a skunk hide, align them and tie them in.
Now you take a small quantity of under fur you just cut from the hide, you wax the thread and the twist dub the fur to the thread, wrap it to the front and stop about two hook eye lengths from the eye. Put a half hitch around the hook shank.
Now spin your thread and stick your bodkin in the thread to split the thread. Noe take a small bunch of guard hairs and align them, stick them in the split thread, align the tips and then cut the butts.Pull the thread tight make several wraps of the thread and guard hairs. tie off, whip the head, add head cement and there t is right in front of you. Now open your eyes, what do you think?

Re: skunk fly
I tried it and just ended up tying my thumb to the hook, with a bunch of shunk dubbing.

Re: skunk fly
I think my imagination stinks...lol. I did good about half way, then lost it. I had an opportunity to get skunk not long ago. I was afraid it was gonna stink up my box with the smell. Not anything I can think of is worse than skunk. BUT, it is a beautiful hide. I might have to grab it next time it comes by me...lol.narcodog wrote:Kelly, just sit back, close your eyes, relax.
