Portable Tying Station

Post by letumgo » Sun Feb 17, 2013 2:09 pm

Recently one of my coworkers came by my office with a small wooden desk organizer. He was going to toss it out, and asked if I could use it for fly tying. I took one look and said, heck yeah! Turned into a perfect little portable organizer.

I just cut a small piece of 1/4" plywood to serve as a cover. For now, I am using rubberbands to hold the lid in place, until I can find a better solution.

This little organizer makes a compact and easy way to carry my tools and spooled materials items. My dubbing block fits nicely into the organizer. I drilled holes into a small wooden block, to serve as a holder for bobbins/tools. I've liked it so much, I have been using it on a regular basis for a couple weeks. Seems to do the trick.

Anyway, just sharing the idea, in hopes others find it helpful.

Ray, Howdy;

Good idea for those with a proclivity to having stuff wander...
and the space for 'extra' things...
What dimensions is it? Something along the lines of
12"X8"X1.5" ???

Good guess Hank. I pulled out a ruler and measured it and got the following dimensions.

13-1/2" long x 9-5/8" wide x 1-1/2 high (outer dimensions)

Love it that the Pearsall's spools fit so well.

Rodger - One man's trash is another man's treasure. This old desk organizer looks like it was perfectly designed to hold silk and thread spools. I was very happy when I found that they fit perfectly into each section.

By the way, did you notice that the tweezers fit nicely next to the Clark's Dubbing block? (middle of top photo)

This should serve you very well, as you tinker with it for some time. Can't wait to see what it looks like in a couple months. :D
