831 Floss Olive Spider

Really liking the effect of the "brushed back" thorax effect of the Li'l Dorothy pattern, I've applied it on a small olive spider having an abdomen of embroidery floss.

Hook: Daiichi 1550, Size #16
Thread: Griffith Sheer 14/0, burgundy
Hackle: Very light blue dun hen
Abdomen: Single strand of #831 embroidery floss
Thorax: Dyed olive rabbit in split thread, wrapped and brushed back to "veil" abdomen

I like that technique as well. This pattern and the Li'l Dorothy that you have shared with us could not have been tyed better to demonstrate the split thread technique. You do great work Bill.

Bill, that is an excellent tie. I rather like using the embroidery thread for some bodies, like buttonhole silk, but very inexpensive, endless color selection and really nice looking when it's wet. No telling how many times I've gotten the stink eye from someone in JoAnne's for finding the end of the thread and wetting it with spit until I can find the right color. It looks juicy. This is a nice combination.

Bill - This is really nice. The 'veiled" abdomen is such a nice touch.

Now I need to run to the store to pick up some 831 embroidery floss. That usually mean I come home with a range of shades. Just in case... Good thing embroidery floss is cheap.

Both this and your rendering of the Li'l Dorothy are 2 of the cleanest ties I've seen
on the forum, to date.
My question is about the veiling of that creates the 'Brushed Back' effect, is it
simply using a longer staple or in the split thread or do you do something different?

Many thanks, everyone. Hank, you are correct about the longer dubbing, but not spinning the split thread loop too tight and stroking the fibers back with each wrap helps too.

Unbelievably good pattern you have created! It is slick and nice and I love the veiling (brushed back) effect over the abdomen! It is screaming "I am a BWO and come and get me"!! Look out bluegills and trouts of all sorts! Skues valued greatly the BWO and I think he would be proud of you Bill! I know we are!!
