Re: Tennessee Jed
Ron just use whatever you've got man! I settled on these colors because they all contrast well and don't blend in together and "muddy". I tried silk, glo-brite floss and some other stuff but found that danville 210 lays the best. I also do the same fly in natural colors...brown, olive, bla...

Re: Bird's Nests color combos
I'll take some good photos of both the flank he dyed and the dubbing blends and post them for you guys to see. Sorry I'm still trying to figure out how to navigate the forum and didn't see this. I became pretty obsessed with Mr. Bird early on. I've read the article about that says he used maple brow...

Re: Tools?
DOUGSDEN I don't think you give yourself enough credit. You tie a FINE fly so by default you are indeed a craftsman. It's kind of a zen balance thing for me going from working with something that requires all your strength, grip, heat, and a very heavy hand for 12 hours...then coming home and wrappi...

Tennessee Jed
Here is a pattern I tie for bluegill fishing I call the Tennessee Jed. My honey hole has very large gills in it (11 3/4" is my best) so I tie it in a size 10 and use it for my bottom fly. Gills and small bass can't resist it. If you don't know what color they might key on...show 'em EVERY color...

Re: Tying Wax
A couple other things I thought I'd mention...I have customers that in the cold winter months will take a larger size piece of wax (maybe the size of a marble rather than a pea) warm it till its soft, and mash a small magnet in it. From there they store it on or under the shade of their lamp so it's...

Re: Coq n' Copper
Dougsden do you mean a brotherhood pin? Carl was already generous enough to send me one a while back along with some sample flies and some nutrea rat. He made me swear to never fish a dry fly again tho hahaha

Tools?
Anybody here make any fly tying tools? Cool dubbing needles, brushes, rakes, whirls...stuff like that. Maybe even more fancy stuff like bobbins? I would really like to see them and possibly purchase or trade for some stuff. A lot of things I make myself just because I'm a metal fabricator by trade a...

Re: Tying Wax
Hey Rex! My handle (Terrestrial12) comes from my little "brand" of wax. It's not so much a brand really, as I don't really push it or self promote. That's just not in my nature. But I did need a name when it started being recognized at tying events and sold in fly shops. How's about you se...

Re: Coq n' Copper
Well idk about all that, but I appreciate the kind words very much. Wire bodies are about the only time I use the rotary function of my vise. After each wrap I bump it with the back of my thumb nail on each side of the hook shank to "seat" it to the previous wrap. They come out pretty perf...

Re: Red Fox Squirrel - Harvesting Dubbing
Make your life easier and pick up 10 dollar electric beard trimmer. I got mine at "dollar general". Not worth a damn for trimming beards but works great for shaving tree rats! On really good winter coats I'll shave them with the shortest guard on it, and it leaves about 1/16th of the very ...
