Ok- In my limited knowledge, forging is a mechanical process which aligns steel molecules to add strength - think a big burly guy hammering a piece of red hot steel on an anvil. Tempering is a heating process which if done correctly alters the chemical properties of said steel, enabling it to spring...

I use a lacquer thinner, which contains toluene and acetone. Veniards Celaire used to be a favor of mine. However, I stop using it once it be a came difficult to obtain.

That would be excellent Ray, thanks very much for the offer. One of the keys with scotch tie hackle is that all of the larger feathers at the bottom of the neck now have a use other than being relegated to the streamer pile.
