Iso Nymph

So, this is my attempt at the Dette Iso Nymph. Needless to say the top is the Dette. I don't have a recipe, so I am faking it. Sorry, my picture taking is definitely lacking. After seeing Ray's Fiery Brown/Sunset fly, I just wanted to try Jamieson's Shetland Spindrift - 186 Sunset for this fly.

Terrific job on the pattern. The body profile looks perfect. Somewhere I have a photo of the real insect for comparison. From memory the rear body shape and side gills/frill looks just like your fly.

It looks like Dette version may have a trimmed mallard wing cover (guess).

Overall a terrific job.

Thanks for the observation about the wing casing. I don't have any mallard wings, but I'll look for something else that might work. That would make splitting the partridge a lot easier.

I have a copy of The Dettes, a Catskill Legend by Eric Leiser.
The first part is their history, the second, Their techniques and it just so happens that their
iso nymph is in the mix.
Ray is right as they call for a light shade mallard wing quill for the wing case.
The pattern is also heavily weighted as Walt said it should be fished deep.
They used 2 parts muskrat 1 part red wool with a grey ostrich herl for the abdomen
but you nailed it with the JSS sunset (I love that stuff)

Rick - The dubbing blend sounds very similar to the Connover blend. It makes a very pretty fly.

I didn't have any mallard, but I did have some grouse wings, so that is what I used for the wing case for REDO. The abdomen is a 2 to 1 mix or muskrat and red wool.

These patterns are great! The Iso Nymph works wonders in my district on those occasionally snooty, deep living Bluegills that do not like to come up into the light of day! The ones shaped like dinner plates or hubcaps!
I am witnessing some world class tying here!

Greg, I have a few whole birds in my freezer that I need to get processed and dried out. I will contact you when I get around to doing it. We need to do a meetup someday anyway. It will be a perfect opportunity to finally introduce ourselves.
