I thought I'd share a little mash up of the Diawl Back and Cruncher style flies I've been playing with. I have a fascination with British wet flies. It's basically a diawl bach done in seals fur rather that peacock herl and with a full hackle rather than a beard. Also it has the cheeks of the cruncher style fly. It don't look like much but trust me when I say you better tie it on a good hook and keep your net handy.
Hook: size 10, 1xl, 2x heavy
Tail: natural black hen hackle
Abdomen: seals fur dyed claret
Rib: pearl tinsel (looks gold in the picture but isnt)
Thorax: seals fur in a split thread or dunning loop tied spikey
Cheeks: purple holographic tinsel or standard silver tinsel
Hackle: natural black hen

Wonderful amalgam of the two styles.

I was surprised to read the rib is not gold tinsel. Interesting how the body color plays off the rib color.

I honestly believe it's the rib that does the fish catching. As with any wet fly, the important thing is what it look like when it's wet. The pearl rib seems to reflect a wide array of colors depending on the natural sunlight and water clarity. Like a chameleon haha I also do the same fly with black seals fur, pearl rib, and silver tinsel cheeks. Sometimes with a flo-fire orange thread head. They are especially effective on gray, overcast days and in stained water after a rain
