Chadwicks 477

Post by Terrestrial12 » Sun Sep 11, 2022 8:47 pm

Sorry guys but i wasn't sure where to put this and it's technically about nymphs so here we go...
I'm looking for opinions from the true nerds. It seems 477 replacements whent from a cult following to pretty mainstream. First a select few were out there and it was people meticulously searching yarn shops then comparing them wet and dry. Now pretty much every supply house has a 477 sub and they all claim that they have hired top secret NASA scientists to make an exact copy. Funny that every brand makes this claim so I'm wondering what you all think is a good sub. Even in the photos on the websites you can see they vary quite a bit in color. Some don't even look close other than simply being a tannish/grayish color overall. If you actually have some 477 to compare to all the better!
P.s....I use a dollar store yarn I think is extremely close as well as jaimesons spin drift oyster and they both work great. I realize it probably doesn't matter all that much.

I never thought the nymph that used 477 was all that great.

I have some original 477 as well as some of the substitutes. Berroco UAF 1214 is the best in my view. Tied on a hook it's difficult to tell it apart from 477.

i never could figure out how a trout could tell the difference between 477 and all of the substitutes

i have a very limited length of 477 and a bunch of berroco 1214. 477 stays in the baggie

Yes the berroco steel cut oats seems to be by far the best substitute, at least according to a really good article I've read about it....problem is it's no longer in production either and I cand get my hands on any. And no the fish can't tell the difference in a lot of cases. You can tie the same fly in a variety of different colors and have great success. I still want a really close 477 substitute tho

I got to the dance after both of the above were no longer made. Someone here on the forum recommended Jamieson Shetland Spindrift - 290 Oyster. I don't have any 477 so I can't personally make a comparison, I guess the 290 Oyster will have to do for me. I'm sure someone on the forum here could put up some comparison pics.

From what I have read, Sawyer had a hard time finding 477 back then.

Wsbailey- HOLY CRAP man you have a whole card?!? And a big card at that. That's awesome! The upavon 477 is actually what made me start this thread. I think it looks pretty close too. I'm still undecided on how I feel about the semperfli 477.

Jcwillow777-yes in my opinion the oyster colored spin drift is awesome. I think it looks nothing like Chadwicks 477 but it is a great color and produces really well. The photo Mr Bailey posted above looks like it has a really noticeable pink hue when dry and I've never seen it look like that so maybe oyster is closer than I had realized. Either way I like the spin drift and have it in several colors for the killer big, crane fly larva, scud, and a little floating nymph I tie that uses nothing but yarn.
