Do the trout show a preference? I am drawn to the hackled version.

They sure do. As the sun and water start to warm a little, and the midges start emerging, it is wise to have some sort of wing/collar, or shuck.

I like those enough to maybe attempt them. I found an old stash of hooks from my tiny fly days. What's the body material?

Funny you mentioned midges. My first thought was bits of fish that had gone through the turbines.

The body is just a base of White thread, ribbed with fluorescent Pink thread. Then covered in UV resin. Super easy.

This is my last day of required (State) quarantine. I am going to tie a few more of these little midges today in some other colors, then fish them in the morning. On a Freestone.

The collar can be Ostrich or mole as well.

Any chance these are taken by the fish as scuds or shrimp?

Gray ribbed with black is a standard for me.
