HELP!

Post by Terrestrial12 » Tue Jun 21, 2022 7:06 am

Hey yall I'm wondering if someone could help me out and do a SBS of the "clump" "rolled" or "folded" style wings. I guess more like a clyde style starling wing. I've heard about it and read several references to it from tyers like Pritt and other Yourkshiremen buy I can't find any tutorials on how to actually do it. I fell like I've read somewhere about cutting a slip of starling and "rolling" it into a clump. I figured this would be a great place to ask! I do really enjoy clyde style winged flies and winged wet flies but usually avoid doing upright wing slips just because they aren't durable enough to justify the headache. Thanks!

There’s a lot of talent on this website, maybe someone will post a tutorial. However if someone does not? Search the inter-web for an Oliver Edwards video clip which has him demonstrating the technique. His videos are among the best out there. Happy hunting!

Hey, T12,

I use rolled or folded wings almost exclusively on my winged wet flies because slip wings just don't hold up unless they're glued. Take a look at the post by wsbailey. That pretty much sums it up. Cut a slip and fold it once, then finesse the fibers into shape like you would for a married wing. For a rolled wing, do the same thing, but fold it twice, then roll it between thumb and fingers.

Things get a bit complicated when your posting the wings upright, as in some of the Clyde style flies. I admit to using a bit of cellire on my fingers to shape the wings and make them more durable.

An easy description of the technique I was given is to fold the wing like you would an 8 1/2 x 11 inch sheet of paper to place in an envelope. It has worked for me for years.

Thank you all I've been practicing this technique and gotten pretty good at it and even developed a technique of my own that's along the same lines. Probably not MINE in all fairness but I've never seen anyone else do it. If anyone is interested it's quite simple and quite hard to screw up, I'd be happy to share.
