Leisenring color and materials book

Post by gingerdun » Fri Aug 09, 2013 10:43 am

Smuggler noticed a rare item on Abebooks.com.
It was assembled in 1966 under Pete Hidy's supervision, and then the lettering was hand-written by him.
This was not one of the 8 numbered copies, so it was probably his personal copy, given to Yale.
Here are thumbnails of all the pages in the Yale volume.
You probably know that you can click on each image and then zoom by pulling the lower-right corner.

Wow, that's just awesome. Never had any prior knowledge to this little gem's existence.
Thank you Lance for posting this. It gives me something to marvel at while at work :D

Did you purchase it for your personal library? What a treasure.

Lance,
What a spectacular book! Indeed, a true treasure. And, your photo's of the pages are really good! Thank you for taking us down this path with your camera! It is a pleasant walk down said path! The colors are so vivid!

Photos of the original "The Leisenring Color & Materials Book" are published in this book, with a foreword by Pete Hidy:

The fact that the photos are "analog" gives it an old touch.

Thanks DD.
The original Color and Materials Book made by Leisenring and given to Pete Hidy was purchased at auction by Paul Schmookler. He reproduced it in his ART OF ANGLING JOURNAL, vol. 1, Issue 3, 2002, along with an article by Gordon Wickstrom, and photographs of eleven Leisenring flies. The article is titled "Big Jim Leisenring, the Grand Old Man". The photographs are very similar to the ones that Gunnar Johnson took in Boise in 1982, and published in his Swedish book Flymfer that is linked above.

Leisenring's idea was to carry the book on the stream. He would then use it to specify colors and materials to match a live insect while its colors were still fresh. Back at his tying bench he'd refer to these notes when tying the fly.

Lance,
I was fortunate to receive that issue from a kind member of this forum recently. I enjoyed the Wickstrom article very much. It wetted my appetite regarding your upcoming book. I am in no hurry, mind you.
