Very cool! Mr. Rhead was very inventive in his combination of materials, and how the materials are used to imitate prey (in this case baitfish).
  • Cork body to provide buoyancy
  • Thin Tin(?) to emulate a silvery white belly of many baitfish
  • Feather tail/Dorsal strip to provide movement and blend of colors to match prey
  • Gold wire rib to bind materials together for durability and suggest scales
Artistically creative design, yet grounded in a intent to imitate natural baitfish. Kinda feels like "steam punk" meets fly tying. Very cool...

I agree -- that's a good way of putting it.

For me personally, though, Louis Rhead's greatest contribution to was to point out, in The Speckled Brook Trout, the erratum in MOM's Favorite Flies and Their Histories that the wrong fly was labeled "Cahill."

Is that a grunge thing? Ray just coined a new fly fishing term: Stream Punk!

    That’s funny!

That would also be a great screen name. I may have to make a new patch for my fishing vest…. “Stream Punk”
