The holy grail!

Post by Terrestrial12 » Tue Oct 18, 2022 6:50 am

Since most folks here use a handle rather than a name I'll assume it's for anonymity and not name drop....but a HUGE thank you to the gentleman from the group that sold me the holy grail of hen hackle, a light honey dun! And for a very reasonable price. Pictured with it is Hidy's watery dun dressing but I substituted a Pardo Coq de Leon for the tail. Sorry for the crappy washed out looking photo of the fly, I couldn't get them both to focus.

Very well done T12! Your ties are inspiring, I’ve been looking for a honey dun myself, hopefully one shows up soon. Take care, Mike.

Unfortunately, honey duns are getting to be rare indeed. Luckily, several years ago I bought two of each of my favorites, a really dark gray list, a nice medium gray list and an almost white list as T12 has pictured. All of mine are Hebert Minor necks.

You would think that the genetic hackle breeders would continue with a breeding program for all the old colors. Maybe there just isn't enough demand.

T12, a neck like yours was favored by Syl Nemes on his PMD imitations, and is mine as well.

Great looking pattern. A fish getter for sure.

I have purchased a few Honey Dun capes over the years. I am always underwhelmed . I have started hackling with one Dun, and one Brown feather.

@partsmam I actually stumbled across one today. It was for sale from some online fly shop out of Montana and was a Hebert miner labeled as a watery dun not a honey dun. Google it and see if you can find it. It was 30 bucks. Yes Ron it's a shame. This one is a vintage Whiting, but probably not any more demand. No greenwells or furnace worth a crap. All people want is crazy long, stiff rooster hackle. Hen is usually just speckled variants if it's high quality.

Glad you like it! There’s still a few left of various shades.

Dearest T12,
This pattern looks great!! Those two long tail fibers really give it that look of the real McCoy! Very real looking and very edible....from the fishes point of view of course!
