There has always been some controversy regarding the air bubble caddis flies are suppose to make during emergence. Hans has always disputed this, and I questioned it as well, but thought it could be true. On another forum, a link was posted to Gary Borger's blog. Read the page, going all the way down to where Gary answers the question.

Good post Mark.
What struck me was the actual emergance struggle. This has Flymph written all over it. The Triple Threat Caddis seems like a natural fit here, as well as for the diving caddis.

I've seen alot of patterns on this site that would fit here.

Thanks for alerting us to Gary Borger's blog comments on the air bubble question.
The use of bubbles by the egg-laying female caddis is new to me, and makes sense.
The centuries-old popularity of hydrofuge dubbing materials indicates that the bubbles certainly don't hurt when presenting a flymph to a trout. Borger's comments help to explain one reason why. Also, the superb cuticle photographs drive home the importance of translucency as a separate quality.
