Have you ever sat at the vice and whacked out a few different spiders, jumping from one game feather to the next and simply enjoying tying seemingly simple flies , marvelling at the beauty and symmetry of a partridge or wookcock hackle, cursing at the fragility of starling, wishing you had a magical cape with smaller hackles and simply revelling in working with natural materials. Whacking out beadhead nymphs or ones weighted with lead or wire is a chore and a half, many dries, similar , but from simple spiders to more complicated such as winged greenwells I find myself far more enjoying the tying, an enjoyment that I only ever experienced whilst tying more materially complicated Irish Lough Wets.

Visually a take to a dry is fantastic but the possibility of a take just subsurface, be it visual or hidden has a certain magic about it that neither dry or deep nymph fishing can match. Is that part of the attraction, combined with pleasurable tying with nearly totally natural materials , is that what makes our interest in these styles so addictive ?
