My First Flymph - One Messy BWO...

Well, having received such a nice welcome after making my first post, in Letumgo's thread about hand dyeing some fur patches, I thought I had better at least try tying some flymphs... Harder than it looks!

I figured I'd try a BWO emerger flymph using my hand-dyed bwo olive australian possum patch for dubbing. I used Pearsall's amber for tying thread and bits of yellow shiny dubbing mixed in, to try and capture the off-gold colors in the thorax and legs. I used a second-hand barred dun hen hackle I've been wanting to find a use for, and used tannish / brownish gray mottled Brahma hen feather fibers for the tail / shuck.

Owning up to be a little more concept artist than craftsman at this point, here's what happened on the first try...

I'm gonna have to practice some more before frequenting the pic postings here, but I'll be back. It's a nice forum you've got going here.

I like both versions a lot, and would fish them with confidence.

What hook did you use? Really cool. It’s got an “old school” vibe.

Please keep posting your creations. I admire your attention to color combinations, and material selection. Very natural. ;)

That really is a short shank on that hook. I'm liking both versions, to be honest, but I'd toss version two at a trout first.

Chugbug,
Wow! These BWO's are great! Now, go give them a soak in front of some willing trouts! You will be amazed!

I think you did really well with those flies. I have found out with flymphs that at times, the messier the fly, the better.

I'm still experimenting with fur, & like you, I found less hair looks better in the end.

Well done.
