New Flymph Hook

Not really new but makes a very nice flymph base.

I have been experimenting with some different contemporary hooks that would make for good foundational Flymph hooks. I use both heavy and standard or light wire hooks. I generally use softer or gamebird hackle on my flymphs tied on heavier hooks. I prefer Tiemco 3761 (and it is available barbless). For lighter flymphs I prefer hen capes coupled with the lighter hooks. I find most of the up eye hooks available a little short in the shank. Not everyone likes the up eye but I personally like the traditional looks of them. I like to tie on them but I certainly use others probably 70% of the time. Some of the older hooks have a little longer shank but of course they are very limited. Anyway, I’ve been playing with a straight eye hook. A nice hook from Tiemco the 101. The straight eye version of their standard dry 100. It lends a nice base for flymphs that I want to ride a little higher. Bonus is a small little tweak in the vise and you have a very nice slightly up eye hook with great proportions for the Flymph design. Plus they are much easier to come by.

Carl - When you “tweak” the hook, are you clamping the eye in the jaws of the vise and pressing the hook? It looks like your including a small fraction of the hook shank too. Neat way to adjust the proportions of the shank.

Great tip. 👍

yes, I place the hook eye in the vise jaws and push the shank. It's not a hard bend. The radius is a bit soft but probably better for structural integrity any way.

I have tried the R50U and the new Partridge, both are a little short in the shank length for me. Still fine hooks for this purpose but I'm just looking for what I prefer.

Carl,

Where did you buy the new Partridge (L5A/UE) hooks? I'm still waiting for the Dette Fly Shop
to receive their order.

Thanks- Ken

Carl - thank you my friend, just what I need: more hook adventures!!! :o  .

Bob - Richard Jefferies has mega good hooks, I’ve bought more from him than any of you would care to know. That hook in particular is my absolute favorite not only for flymphs but wets and dries...... It’s very sharp and very strong.

Now, because you reminded me, I’m just gonna have to place another order when I get home from work today.
😬

Well, after looking at Carl's modifications and Bob mentioning the Partridge L5A/UE, where do you stand on the old and venerable 38933 UE?

I just dug out a box of 94825's UE in #14. ...weird little thing it is, too.

You and Datus Proper, who would like to meet the person responsible for all the hook sizing numbers, lol.

I'd like to meet Helen, who inspected most of the Partridge hooks I have, lol. You know--the "Inspected by Helen" stamps?

Happy weekend,
