Are you sure those are the same hooks for both flies?
Yes, I think it's just the picture angle foreshortening the hook a bit. (FWIW, my affection for the C53s/TMC 200r comes from fishing a Tenkara rod under a pretty heavy canopy here in the Smokies: I run my hand down the leader until I can pinch that bit of bare shank between thumb and forefinger--just the little bit of leverage and trout usually pops off with minimal fuss. Hopefully keeping my hands off the trout improves my C&R percentages a bit.)
At any rate, I don't think you can improve on the original B&W mozzie, but it's fun to see how colored silk works. (BTW, the salmonberry over gold tinsel actually turns into a "Priscella, Queen of the Desert" magenta when wet--I'm not sure what self-respecting trout would fall for such a concoction, but I know I have to find out...
