That's a neat trick.
For those who don't have half/hitch bodkin, tie the head, wrap the hackle, wrap the body to the bend and back to the hackle, apply your dubbing as you wrap back to the bend, and your "tag" is actually your whip finish.
More than one way to flay a feline.

You don't need a tool (other than a finger), to do a haf hitch.

I'm right with you on that one. My point was that just because you don't
need a tool, it doesn't mean you can't do a better job with the tool. I've tied a few without a vise, and a lot without a bobbin, but I still use those tools.
