Black Game

Another spider from the Fogg book, the "Black Game" was supposedly so called because this was another name for the black grouse that provided the hackle for this fly. Fogg explains that a small marginal covert from the wing of a male black grouse is the correct feather, but a dark cock starling feather with a purple tinge will suffice if the grouse is not available. Taking liberties with both options, I have substituted a black hen cape feather, as it looks "gamier" to me than the starling I tried first.

Bill - I am going to enjoy your journey immensely. Love the straight eye hook. In my mind, this gives it a "European" look (compared with the TUE and TDE versions tyed on this side of the pond). Beautiful fly, perfectly tyed.

Bill, I love this one. Seems like everyone who has tied a spider has something similar (spring black, black gnats, little blacks) and this one is a nice variation. I like to read Fogg. You can tell he just enjoys fishing these simple flies and this looks like a great little pattern. The waxed #8 looks rich. I'm glad you're tying up a series.
